Karate or Karate-do to give it it's correct title literally means the way of the empty hand. It is both a physical and mental discipline or method of achieving 'emptiness' based on unarmed combat and self- protection at a multitude of different ranges.
It would be a good idea to include a brief history of karate in here
The traditional Karate practice at Minakami Zanshin Karate Dojo develops through many diverse sources including Kihon waza (basic techniques); Kata (pre-arranged forms); Kumite (sparring); Kobudo (weaponry); Ukemi (break falling); Tachi waza (throwing techniques) and Ne waza (grappling techniques) as well as meditation techniques for relaxation, visualization and to foster the virtues of respect and admiration of others.
The school of Karate offered at Minakami ZKD is Shotokan Karate, a Japanese form of unarmed combat, however, this is not definitive and students are educated and informed to cross train, seeking preferences and improvements in Kihon waza, Kata and Kumite from a many other styles including: Judo, Ju Jitsu, Sombo, Boxing, Thai Boxing, Vale Tudo, Shoot fighting, Freestyle/ Greco- Roman wrestling, Pancrase as well as other styles of Karate.
